Nuclear war imminent
DEFCON 1 is the highest alert level in the U.S. military's defense readiness condition system, indicating nuclear war is imminent or already underway.
The scale runs from DEFCON 5 (peacetime) to DEFCON 1 (maximum readiness).
In casual use, DEFCON 1 describes any situation of extreme urgency or crisis: When she found out about the affair, things went to DEFCON 1.
