decoy ducks
Floating hunter's fakes
Decoy ducks are artificial ducks placed on water to attract real ducks within shooting range.
Hunters use them because ducks are social and will land near what appears to be a safe gathering.
The decoys float on ponds or marshes, sometimes dozens at a time.
By extension, any lure or distraction meant to draw attention away from the real target: The press conference was a decoy duck while the real negotiations happened elsewhere.
