day worker
Hired by shift
A day worker is someone hired and paid by the day rather than on a regular salary or long-term contract.
The term often refers to domestic help who comes in periodically rather than living on the premises: We have a day worker who cleans on Tuesdays and Fridays.
It also applies to laborers hired for temporary manual work.
