cultural boundary
Civilization's invisible fence
A cultural boundary is a line—often invisible—separating regions where different languages, religions, customs, or ethnic identities predominate.
Unlike political borders drawn on maps, cultural boundaries emerge from how people actually live: The cultural boundary between the American South and Midwest shows up in dialect, cuisine, and church attendance.
These boundaries may coincide with political borders or cut across them entirely.
