critical angle

Total reflection boundary

Critical angle is a physics term for the angle of incidence at which light traveling from a denser medium to a less dense one—glass to air, for instance—stops refracting and instead reflects entirely back.

Below this angle, light passes through; at or above it, total internal reflection occurs.

This principle enables fiber optics and gives diamonds their sparkle.
