counterplays

Moves answering moves

Counterplays are strategic responses or opposing moves, especially in chess or competitive games.

A counterplay is an attack launched by a player who is under pressure, shifting from defense to creating threats of their own: Black's counterplay on the queenside gave White something to worry about.

The term extends to any tactical response that answers pressure with pressure rather than passive defense.
