A conference game is a sports contest between two teams belonging to the same athletic conference—a league or division within a larger organization.
In college sports especially, conference games determine standings and playoff eligibility, carrying more weight than non-conference matchups: Their first conference game is against Ohio State.
The term distinguishes league play from games against outside opponents.
