A compulsive gambler is someone who cannot control the urge to gamble despite harmful consequences—financial ruin, damaged relationships, or personal distress.
The compulsion persists even when the person wants to stop: He lost his house, but as a compulsive gambler, he was back at the casino the next week.
Also called a gambling addict or problem gambler.
