compact fluorescents
Curly energy savers
Compact fluorescents are energy-efficient light bulbs that use a gas-filled tube folded into a compact shape to fit standard lamp sockets.
They produce light by passing electricity through mercury vapor, which excites a phosphor coating.
Widely adopted in the 2000s as replacements for incandescent bulbs, they've since been largely supplanted by LED bulbs: The compact fluorescents in the garage finally burned out after fifteen years.
