cocoa pods
Cacao tree fruit
Cocoa pods are the large, ridged fruit of the cacao tree, each containing twenty to fifty seeds surrounded by sweet pulp.
The seeds—cacao beans—are fermented, dried, and processed to make chocolate and cocoa powder.
Pods grow directly from the trunk and branches, ripening to yellow, orange, or red depending on variety: Workers harvest cocoa pods by hand with machetes.
