chuffs

Steam train sounds

Chuffs is the third-person singular of chuff, a verb with two distinct meanings.

A steam engine chuffs when it makes rhythmic puffing sounds: The old locomotive chuffed up the hill.

Separately, to be chuffed (British informal) is to be pleased or delighted: She was chuffed to bits about the promotion.

Chuffs can also be the plural noun for the puffing sounds themselves.
