chosen kin
Family by choice
Chosen kin are people you consider family through emotional bonds rather than blood or legal ties.
The term acknowledges that meaningful family relationships can be formed by choice—close friends who become siblings, mentors who become parental figures: My chosen kin showed up when my biological family wouldn't.
The concept is especially significant in LGBTQ+ communities, where rejection by birth families has historically made chosen families essential.
