chosen families
Bonds we build
Chosen families are the people you consider family not through blood or marriage but through bonds of love, trust, and mutual support.
The term emerged from LGBTQ+ communities, where rejection by birth families made forming alternative kinship networks essential: My chosen family showed up when my parents wouldn't.
The concept has broadened to describe any close-knit group that functions as family: After moving across the country, my roommates became my chosen family.
