chemically imbalanced
Biochemically out of equilibrium
Chemically imbalanced describes a state where neurotransmitters or hormones in the body—especially the brain—are out of proper balance, supposedly causing mental health conditions like depression or anxiety.
The phrase became popular shorthand for explaining psychiatric disorders in biological terms: I'm not lazy, I'm chemically imbalanced.
The concept is now considered oversimplified by many researchers, but remains common in casual explanations of mental illness.
