central business districts
Cities' commercial cores
Central business districts are the commercial and often geographic hearts of cities—the areas with the highest concentration of offices, retail shops, and financial institutions.
Usually called CBDs or simply downtown in American English, these districts feature dense building development and serve as hubs for commerce and public transit: Property values in the central business district have skyrocketed.
