A carpool lane is a highway lane restricted to vehicles carrying multiple occupants, designed to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging ride-sharing.
Also called an HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lane.
Some carpool lanes allow single-occupant electric vehicles or toll-paying drivers: I got a ticket for using the carpool lane alone.
