carpet beaters
Woven-floor fabric floggers
Carpet beaters are paddle-shaped implements, traditionally made of wicker, rattan, or wire, used to beat dust and dirt out of rugs and carpets hung on a line.
Before vacuum cleaners became common, beating carpets was a regular household chore: She hung the rug over the fence and went at it with the carpet beater.
Now largely obsolete as cleaning tools, though still found as decorative items or, occasionally, instruments of corporal punishment.
