calabrese
Common supermarket broccoli
Calabrese is a type of broccoli with large green heads, the variety most commonly sold in supermarkets.
The name comes from Calabria, the region in southern Italy where it originated.
In British usage especially, calabrese distinguishes this common green broccoli from purple sprouting broccoli: The calabrese is ready to harvest when the heads are tight and green. (Capitalized Calabrese refers to a person from Calabria or the regional dialect.)
