cake walks

Very simple undertakings

Cakewalks were originally competitions among enslaved Black Americans, where couples promenaded in elaborate, high-stepping fashion, with the most stylish pair winning a cake.

The dance mocked white ballroom manners while whites often missed the satire.

From this, cakewalk came to mean something easily accomplished: The exam was a cakewalk.

The ease implied comes from the winners making the intricate steps look effortless.
