Blue hills are distant hills or mountains that appear blue due to atmospheric haze scattering light.
The phenomenon gives names to ranges and landmarks across the English-speaking world: the Blue Hills south of Boston, the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The blue tint increases with distance, making far-off terrain seem to recede into sky.
