blacktails

Western coastal deer

Blacktails are mule deer of the Pacific coastal regions, distinguished by their dark-tipped tails.

The term covers two subspecies: the Columbian blacktail of the Pacific Northwest and the Sitka blacktail of Alaska and British Columbia.

Hunters prize blacktails for the challenge they present in dense coastal forests and mountainous terrain.

We spotted a nice blacktail buck on the ridge above camp.
