birth mothers
Women who conceived
A birth mother is a woman who has given birth to a child but does not raise that child, typically because she placed the child for adoption.
The term distinguishes her from an adoptive mother, who raises the child.
Birth mother carries emotional weight in adoption contexts, where it acknowledges biological connection while recognizing that parenting roles have transferred.
She decided to contact her birth mother after turning eighteen.
Some prefer the alternative biological mother as more neutral.
