backspacing

Erasing typed characters

Backspacing is moving the cursor backward to delete characters, typically one at a time.

The term comes from typewriters, where the backspace key moved the carriage back one space without erasing.

On computers, backspacing usually deletes as it goes: I noticed the typo and started backspacing to fix it.
