auricular hematoma
Wrestler's ear injury
An auricular hematoma is a collection of blood between the cartilage and skin of the outer ear, typically caused by blunt trauma.
Common among wrestlers, boxers, and rugby players, it occurs when impact separates tissue layers and blood pools in the space.
Without drainage, the cartilage loses blood supply and deforms permanently into what's called cauliflower ear: The referee stopped the match so the doctor could examine the auricular hematoma.
