audit notice
IRS examination letter
An audit notice is an official communication from a tax authority informing a taxpayer that their financial records will be examined.
The IRS or state agencies issue audit notices by mail, specifying which tax year and what documentation is required: We received an audit notice requesting receipts for all charitable donations.
Getting one doesn't necessarily mean wrongdoing—audits can be random or triggered by discrepancies.
