arid region
Parched terrain area
An arid region is an area receiving very little rainfall—typically less than 10 inches annually—where evaporation exceeds precipitation.
Deserts are the classic example: The American Southwest is an arid region.
The term appears in geography, ecology, and climate science to describe lands where water scarcity shapes the landscape and limits vegetation.
