ant bites

Tiny painful welts

Ant bites are the painful marks left when ants pinch or sting skin.

Most cause minor irritation—small red bumps that itch for a day or two.

Fire ant bites are more severe, producing burning welts that blister and can trigger allergic reactions: Her legs were covered in ant bites after the picnic.

The term covers both true bites (from mandibles) and stings (from venom), though most people don't distinguish between them.
