amateur nights
Novice performance evenings
Amateur nights are events where nonprofessionals perform, typically at comedy clubs or music venues, hoping to launch careers or simply experience the stage.
The phrase extends figuratively to any situation marked by incompetence or lack of professionalism: The whole project felt like amateur night—nobody knew what they were doing.
