alternative weekly
Local indie publication
An alternative weekly is a free newspaper distributed in a city or region, typically covering local news, arts, and culture from a progressive or countercultural perspective.
These publications emerged in the 1960s and peaked before the internet era, known for investigative journalism, extensive entertainment listings, and personal ads: I picked up the alternative weekly to find concert listings.
Many have folded or moved online.
