albic horizon

Bleached soil stratum

An albic horizon is a pale soil layer that has been leached of clay, iron, and organic matter, leaving behind light-colored silica and sand particles.

Found beneath the surface in certain forest and wetland soils, it indicates intense downward movement of water over long periods.

The name comes from Latin for white.
