airspace violation
Breaching sovereign skies
An airspace violation occurs when an aircraft enters another nation's sovereign airspace without authorization.
Nations control the sky above their territory and may intercept, force down, or even shoot down unauthorized aircraft.
Violations range from accidental navigation errors to deliberate provocations: The fighter jet was scrambled after an airspace violation near the border.
The term also applies to drones and missiles.
