activities of daily living
Basic self-maintenance routines
Activities of daily living are the basic self-care tasks people perform routinely: bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, moving around.
The term appears mainly in medical and eldercare contexts, where the ability to perform these tasks measures functional independence.
Someone who can no longer manage activities of daily living may need assisted living or home care.
Often abbreviated ADL or ADLs.
