accidents of birth

Accidents of birth are circumstances determined by when, where, or to whom you are born—factors entirely outside your control that nonetheless shape your life.

Race, nationality, family wealth, and native language are all accidents of birth.

The phrase often carries a sense of moral arbitrariness: Why should accidents of birth determine access to opportunity?

It appears frequently in discussions of privilege and social justice.
