Tora Bora
Mountain cave complex
Tora Bora is a cave complex in the White Mountains of eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border.
The name means "black dust" in Pashto.
It became internationally known in late 2001 as the site of a major battle during the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, where al-Qaeda fighters including Osama bin Laden were believed to be hiding.
The caves had been expanded during the Soviet-Afghan War with CIA support.
The Battle of Tora Bora now often symbolizes a missed opportunity—bin Laden apparently escaped into Pakistan during the siege.
