The Terror
Revolutionary French bloodbath
The Terror refers to the period of extreme political violence during the French Revolution (1793–1794), when the revolutionary government executed thousands of perceived enemies by guillotine.
The Committee of Public Safety, led by Robespierre, orchestrated mass arrests and summary trials.
The Terror claimed over 16,000 official executions.
The term has since become shorthand for any regime's systematic use of fear and violence against its own population.
