Southern honor
Antebellum gentleman's code
Southern honor is a cultural code historically associated with the American South, emphasizing reputation, personal dignity, and the defense of one's name and family against perceived insults.
It valorized courage, loyalty, and a readiness to answer slights with violence—dueling was its ultimate expression.
The code applied primarily to white men and was bound up with hierarchy, slavery, and later, defense of the Lost Cause.
Critics see it as a euphemism for touchiness and brutality dressed in gentility.
The phrase still appears in discussions of regional identity and violence: He invoked Southern honor to justify the confrontation.
