Omicron variant

Fifteenth-letter mutation

The Omicron variant is a strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, designated B.1.1.529, first identified in late 2021.

Named using the Greek alphabet system for COVID-19 variants, it spread rapidly worldwide due to high transmissibility, though it generally caused less severe illness than earlier strains.

The Omicron variant changed the course of the pandemic.
