No Child Left Behind Act
Federal schooling mandate
The No Child Left Behind Act was a 2002 U.S. federal law that tied school funding to standardized test performance, requiring states to measure student achievement annually and penalizing schools that failed to show adequate yearly progress.
The law aimed to close achievement gaps but drew criticism for encouraging teaching to the test and narrowing curricula.
It was replaced in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act.
