Navajo Code Talkers
Honored WWII communicators
Navajo Code Talkers were Native American Marines who transmitted military communications in the Navajo language during World War II.
The Japanese never broke the code, which used Navajo words for military terms—"turtle" for tank, "iron fish" for submarine.
The term now appears in discussions of Indigenous contributions to American military history: My grandfather was a Navajo Code Talker in the Pacific.
