MASH units

Mobile surgical hospitals

MASH units are Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals—field medical facilities designed to provide emergency surgery close to combat zones.

The concept gained prominence during the Korean War, where these units saved lives by treating the wounded before transport to permanent hospitals.

The term became widely known through the television series *M*A*S*H*: MASH units were positioned just behind the front lines.
