Japanese plums
Umeboshi's fresh form
Japanese plums are stone fruits from trees native to China but long cultivated in Japan.
Rounder and juicier than European plums, they range from yellow to deep red and are the plums most commonly sold fresh in American supermarkets.
The trees bloom early and are often grown ornamentally for their flowers.
