Italian citizenship
Passport from Rome
Italian citizenship is the legal status of belonging to the Italian state, carrying rights to live and work in Italy and the European Union.
Italy recognizes citizenship through descent (jure sanguinis), meaning people with Italian ancestors—even several generations back—may claim citizenship if the chain was never broken by renunciation.
This has led many Americans and others to pursue Italian citizenship through genealogical documentation.
Citizenship can also be acquired through marriage, residency, or naturalization.
