High Anxiety

Intense mental distress

High anxiety is a state of intense worry or nervousness, more severe than ordinary concern.

The phrase often appears in clinical or self-help contexts: She's been experiencing high anxiety about the move.

It also serves as the title of Mel Brooks's 1977 Hitchcock parody, which has given the phrase a comedic undertone in some contexts.
