Hatfield-McCoy feud

Famous family rivalry

The Hatfield-McCoy feud was a violent conflict between two Appalachian families along the West Virginia-Kentucky border from roughly 1863 to 1891.

What began as Civil War tensions and disputes over land and livestock escalated into murders, kidnappings, and vigilante raids that left over a dozen dead.

The feud has become America's most famous family rivalry, used as shorthand for any bitter, prolonged conflict between neighboring groups: Their property-line dispute turned into a real Hatfield-McCoy situation.
