Hague-Visby Rules
Maritime carrier obligations
The Hague-Visby Rules are an international treaty governing the liability of ocean carriers for cargo damage or loss during shipment.
They establish minimum responsibilities for carriers—including seaworthiness of the vessel and proper cargo handling—while limiting their liability to specified amounts per package or unit.
The bill of lading incorporated the Hague-Visby Rules.
The rules amended the original 1924 Hague Rules, with "Visby" referring to the 1968 protocol adopted in Visby, Sweden.
