Groundlings
Los Angeles troupe
Groundlings were the audience members who stood in the open yard of Elizabethan theaters, paying the cheapest admission to watch plays from ground level.
Shakespeare's Globe had space for hundreds of groundlings, who stood through performances that could last three hours.
The term sometimes implies an unsophisticated audience: playing to the groundlings.
Today, The Groundlings is also a Los Angeles comedy theater and troupe known for launching sketch comedians.
