European settlements are communities established by Europeans outside Europe, particularly during colonial expansion from the 15th through 20th centuries.
The term often appears in historical contexts describing colonization of the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania: The first permanent European settlement in North America was St. Augustine.
It can also refer neutrally to any community where Europeans have settled.
