Division III

Small-college sports tier

Division III is the lowest tier of competitive collegiate athletics in the United States, governed by the NCAA.

Unlike Division I and II programs, Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships—student-athletes compete purely for the sport.

The designation emphasizes academics over athletics, with smaller schools and less intense recruitment: She chose a D3 school so she could play soccer without the pressure of a scholarship program.
