COBRA coverage
Post-employment health insurance
COBRA coverage is the right to continue employer-sponsored health insurance after leaving a job, losing coverage, or experiencing other qualifying events.
The acronym comes from the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985, which requires most employers to offer this option.
The former employee typically pays the full premium: COBRA coverage kept us insured while I looked for work, but it cost over $1,800 a month.
