Arctic communities

Far north villages

Arctic communities are settlements of people living in the far northern regions, typically within or near the Arctic Circle.

The term encompasses Indigenous populations like the Inuit, Yupik, and Sámi who have inhabited these areas for thousands of years, as well as more recent settlements.

These communities face unique challenges from extreme cold, limited daylight, and increasingly, climate change: Arctic communities are on the front lines of melting permafrost.
